Playable Critters
With the addition of critter growth, alpha critters and "high player density" area indicator on the map, I have a different idea on how to make critters playable:
When playing as a critter, your objective
is to simply survive while
passively growing. You don't have quests, however, to grow, you are required to move to a "high player density" area on the map and stay there, as you will grow very slowly if you go to a more empty area of the map.
You'll always spawn (and respawn, if you die) as your smallest growth stage, and, provided that you are in a highly populated area, you'll grow quickly into your adult form, from there, a quest of some kind could be assigned that rewards you with becoming an alpha critter once completed (kill X players, receive X damage from other players without dying).
So, playing as a critter would be a low investment challenge mode where you try to survive as a character that everyone wants to kill, with the possible end goal of becoming an alpha critter.

RhiannonAdditional idea. If you manage to get to alpha you could get some kind of homecave decoration ticket to apply to one of your not critter dinos or unlock it as a store item on all of them. Just a small little keepsake of some kind. Each critter could give you a different version of the decoration. Different colors of some kind of plant or gem or something. Glowing mushrooms. A passive critter den (you got a cheeky home invaider XD). Something fun.
